Pay more for Pandora music streaming, no more annual option

songs-pandora-with-facebookI suppose one downside to music streaming is that you don’t own anything. In other words when you bought a cd for example, you owned it at the price. It’s not like you had to renew or pay additional fees. Once you had it in hand, it was over.

So, it turns out that there is an increase fee of $1 per month for new users of the premium Pandora One service. So that means $4.99/month instead of $3.99/month. The reason for the increase is a rising royalty rate being paid to the musicians.

Don’t fear too much. Sign up before may and you get the $3.99 price.

W00t! Pandora ending 40 hour listening cap on free mobile listening

Great news music fans. Starting September 1, 2013, Pandora will no longer have that 40 hour monthly cap on the free mobile listening. Guess why? Turns out advertising might have something to do with it.

Pandora plans to eliminate the blanket 40-hour-per-month limit on free mobile listening effective September 1st. In the 6 months since we first implemented the free mobile listening limitation, we have gained critical insights into our user population that has given us greater control of our business. Because of these insights Pandora has implemented both other surgical levers to control content cost and new features that will allow for greater product usage. With these tools in place we are well positioned to continue to both optimize the cost structure of the business and further monetization progress.
